Now from studying these proverbs you will receive something. The word ‘receive’ is a very strong one. What you are going to get as the result of reading this book is quite tremendous. What you will receive is this: instruction in these areas: wisdom, that is, practical knowledge; justice, which means here knowing the right way, understanding principles; you will be taught to think in terms of principles. That is a very rare thing. There are very few people today who can think in terms of principles. The bombardment of the mind with knowledge, facts, has flushed out of most people's minds the ability to reason, to think in terms of principles. So here the book of Proverbs promises to teach us how to handle knowledge, how to think, and how to get things right. That is really what is meant here by the word translated 'justice' – rightness. And ‘judgment’ – to discern and to see into things and to pass accurate and right judgments on them – how to judge. Do you know how to go about assessing things, assessing situations? And ‘equity’ or fairness. These things will be learned from this extraordinary and unique book, which is so unlike any other book in the Bible.
Application
Whatever we may think of our much-vaunted modern scientific training, there is no doubt it washes right out of the mind the ability really to think. You have got to put that in yourself alongside the facts. Modern scientific training will not tell you that. They will say it teaches you to reason, but the scientific method of reasoning is so materialistic and so rationalistic, it is entirely irrelevant to the moral frame of things. And there are very few people who know how to think in terms of principles, even in the churches, even in evangelical circles, otherwise we would not have such blatant pragmatism.
