Proverbs 1:32

‘The turning away of the simple will slay them.’ They turned away repeatedly when they could have come. Men and women are responsible for what they do with the gospel. Yes, the heart of man is hard, and we need the Spirit of God to draw us to Christ, but the response of turning away is our response and we cannot deny it or pretend that we did not reject God with all our hearts. Turning away is serious. If you are on a journey and you take no map, then if you take a wrong turning and turn into a desert, you may get lost and run out of petrol and have nothing to eat and drink and die. To turn away from God is to turn away from the only one who has the power to deliver us, who understands what needs to be done to save us, and who is willing to do it.
Application
The word translated prosperity is better translated complacency. It was complacency that made the fool ignore God for so long and put so many other things before seeking him. There was a love of ease. This is a slightly different kind of fool. ‘Don’t you want to get trained?’ we ask the youngster who is neglecting his studies. ‘No,’ he says, ‘I finished school yesterday; I will wait for life to come to me.’ But life has destructive winds and gales. Life can become an earthquake ready to swallow us up. But if you know Christ and have trusted in him, then if death strikes, you are in heaven. You do not have to quake with fear over the next unexpected event to come into your life.
