This verse sets the scene by taking us back to the illustrations given in the first section of the book. Father and mother are here used interchangeably and are assumed to be good parents who have conscientiously brought up their son and taught him wise principles for life, but with no suggestion that all parents do this.
The key thing is that God the supreme Father, whose concern is for human souls, is watching and notes what we do. Christian people, you can carry out your work, your training, on this great farm of life, this family of the Lord's people, this kingdom of God. Our Heavenly Father, is training us and teaching us how to live, how to work, how to do our tasks. We can do them in a way that will cause God great disappointment, great unhappiness – if we can use human terms, of Almighty God – or great pleasure.
