Now come three proverbs which do not obviously fit the current theme – ‘Words and the use of the tongue’, nevertheless, since Scripture tells us that Solomon arranged the proverbs in order, and since verse before and after these three are clearly on the subject of words, we must try to understand these three in context and see the connection. The previous proverb spoke of laying up knowledge, introducing the idea of stored up treasure and it also spoke of destruction; both of these ideas are present in verse 15.
The wise believer stores up his mind, he always bears in mind he has got a ministry of conversation, a ministry of speech, and this is vitally important, and the mind needs furnishing, and things have to be remembered and stored up. Just as the rich man organised his city: constructs strong walls, arranges for there to be some trained men, who are practiced in the military arts for defence, so we have to prepare ourselves to have a ministry of words, and to be wholesome and productive in speech. How many among us as Christians are completely stumped when some worldling who is against us comes for us on the attack verbally, at our place of study, or employment? How do we handle it? We must discipline ourselves so that we know how to conduct our conversation, and not to lurch from one point to another in such a way that would never help or influence anybody.
