Here is the point now consolidated. What is a slack hand? The picture is of this son, and he goes out into the vineyard to tend the vine, and father may be watching.
Do you not think that God knows? Christian person, young man, young woman, you go out into this coming week, and you are up to things which are not consistent with the Christian walk. Do you not think God knows? Do you think God only sees when you come into church, when you adopt a pious posture, when you say righteous and pious things. You may deceive your Christian friends. They will only suspect what you are up to, although it will be a lot more obvious to them even than you think. But do you not think that God knows? And you will be impoverished, you will not be blessed. God will not be with you. You can wander around saying, ‘Oh the Lord has done this for me, and the Lord has done this for me’, but he will not. If you deal with a slack hand, if you cheat, if you play the hypocrite, if your life is a mixture of Christian activities and non-Christian activities, and yet you are a child of God, you will be spiritually impoverished. You will be spiritually a pygmy, you will be weak, increasingly dominated by sin, and you will not be any use. If the employer or the father knows perfectly well what is going on in the fields, however you go through the motions of work, how much more does God see? You cannot be a Christian only by imagining that you are doing the right thing, or intending to do the right thing. You have got to be conscientious in practice, day by day. You have got to be praying to avoid sin. You have got to be planning and carrying out acts of helpfulness, in righteousness, in witness, in Christian service, in kindness. Righteousness is something which has to be done. What we need in the Christian life is self-discipline. You get out into the field, and you do not say it is too hot today, I am just going to play at this for a few minutes, and then I am going to slide off somewhere, and dash off and do what I want to, what is more comfortable.
