One conclusion that the wicked may reach is that no half measures will succeed, but that, if it is to win, wickedness must combines all its forces in a full-frontal attack on God and his standards. This, they may be foolish enough to imagine, will give them a strength that is able to overcome even the Lord. Of course, when they think like this, they are evaluating God by what they can see: by the apparent strength of his people on earth. These seem to them to be a feeble people with little power in the world, little influence, and including few of the great ones of the earth. Because they cannot see the Lord who is on hand to defend his people, they make this false assessment. They are caught in the trap of the Lord’s devising by which he will exalt the humble and humble the proud, catching the wise in their craftiness. The result will be that they enter boldly into the prison which will close its doors behind them with no escape. Their hatred is unmasked and they make no effort to hide it because their confidence in their superior power means that all hesitation is thrown to the wind. The righteous however are delivered. They are delivered from all the trials of living in a cursed world and of fighting with sin within, but especially from the persecutions of the wicked who desire to wipe them from the face of the earth. Not only the righteous but their seed are delivered, for God’s promise to the righteous is to bless their children, physical but especially spiritual.
