A guide was very often needed in society. Here you are, back in the ancient East and here are the people, they are largely farmers and small tradesmen and then they need to get about and the people who make things need to interact with other cities not so very far away.
Here we are going down the journey of life and we are Christian people. What is the Lord's will for us? We can be so foolish. We can have in our minds desires and aims of our own and we want these things. Then we begin to justify it. It is as though we have got a built-in deceptive guide. We dream up all these elaborate explanations. We see coincidences all around us: surely the Lord is saying this; surely the Lord is saying that. We can be so pious and we can convince ourselves that we are in the right path by appealing to prayers that we have made, but really we have never let go of what we wanted in the first place. This will lead us into destruction, not necessarily to spiritual destruction, but into ruin for the months or for the years ahead. So here is a warning. Let absolute integrity come into our own attitude for God's will for us.
