Lying is the gateway to all evil. It does not matter how small a lie is; the readiness to make use of it in order to gain some advantage is enough to corrupt the whole heart; one lie can destroy an infinite quantity of truth. God cannot lie, and he cannot tolerate or endorse our lies, for he would then himself take ownership of our lies. If God will not lie in order to prevent a great loss – the loss of his beloved Son – he certainly will not lie to prevent a small loss – the losses that we face. If there is not a way out that involves only the truth, then there is not a way out at all. God loves the truth and even the smallest lie is prepared to dispense with part of the truth for the sake of gain or relief from suffering or saving face. God always and only walks the path of truth, and it is his glory that the way of salvation involves his total and absolute commitment to the truth. Therefore those who see this and who refuse to embrace a lie but desire to follow the Lord in the path of truth whatever it costs them, are his delight.
