The virtuous woman – what an interesting picture this is! The word translated virtuous means exactly what it says; it comes from the Hebrew for a force, actually an army. The word has this idea in it: somebody of very varied force and power, an army of different people.
It is a picture of the believer’s outlook. What is my attitude to the Lord, to the kingdom of God, to the church? Am I like this virtuous wife? Am I dedicated to it, do I have its interests at heart, will I give myself to its affairs? That is the proper attitude of the believer. Of course, we have got our own homes to run, and our own living to earn, and all this has its place, but our attitude is loyalty and commitment and effort for the house of God, and for the cause of Christ, that is what is in mind.
