Proverbs 13:23 Commentary and Bible Study

Two quite different interpretations of this verse have been suggested. Some understand Solomon to compare what the poor could have from their meagre provision if they were to make proper use of it, with what they in fact do have as a result of unjust practices of others or as a result of their own bad management, which robs them of even these slender resources. The lesson is then about the harmful effect of injustice, or it is about the failure to make use of the portion allotted us by the Lord, which, if handled with discretion, would be sufficient for our needs. But another interpretation sees a comparison between the poor man’s careful handling of the little he has, with the careless squandering of the much larger portion given to the wealthy man. The basic lesson is then that surprisingly the meagre portion of the poor turns out to be more beneficial than the plenty of the rich and powerful. Though the words are capable of either meaning, the second brings out a stronger lesson, and is consistent with Solomon’s practice of comparing two different individuals. In earthly affairs it is often the case that those who have little in this world, but who make diligent use of their portion, find that they have all that they need. On the other hand the profligate who assume that their treasures will never be exhausted come to ruin through waste and excess. This is a picture of the difference between the believer and the unbeliever. The believer receives all that he has with thanks as from the hand of the Lord. God who possesses all things is able to supply the needs of the poor, and though they may suffer shortage in this world, in the world to come they will inherit unlimited riches that will not fade away. But the unbeliever views this world as all there is and makes himself his own provider. Nevertheless, even what he has in this life will be taken from him because he did not regard the Lord from whom all good things come. Through lack of judgment he loses his goods and his soul.
