Proverbs 15:10

Both halves of the proverb agree. To forsake the way is to hate reproof, because the way to heaven is a way that inevitably involves reproof. Those who have been converted out of bondage to sin do not instantly become righteous. Certainly, they are instantly justified and the perfect righteousness of Christ is immediately imputed to them, but their sanctification will continue for a long or short period according to the time God leaves them in the body. During that time they will experience temptation, relapse into sin, reproof, repentance, forgiveness, and recovery. All of this is painful, and the believer must submit to the discipline of the Lord without murmuring. God will put his finger on those aspects of the believer’s life which need to be reformed and when he does so the Christian must yield and not resist the Lord. The true convert has the matter in his heart and he will not turn back to his old ways because he knows that God disciplines him for his good. He wants to be free from sin and he thanks the Lord for chastisement because it is the only way that he can advance to his goal. But there are those who seem to be on the road to heaven, but who do not really know the Lord. They have never so grasped the goal of seeing the Lord that nothing will put them off, and they are not prepared to accept the rebukes of the Lord because they still love their sins more than him. When they are corrected, resentment rises up within them and they cannot bear correction, even though it is God doing the correction.
