Proverbs 16:13 Commentary and Bible Study

What is said in general in the first part of the proverb is made particular in the second. How does a person obtain the favour of the king? On the assumption that they are known to the king and move in circles that bring them into contact with the king, then those who speak truth and promote good and honest values in his kingdom are appreciated by a wise king. Such people work for the peace of his kingdom and he naturally regards them as friends to his throne. They are not stirring up discontent, or attacking him behind his back, but can be trusted to defend his cause even when they are not watched. These are the kind of people the king appreciates, and he wishes his kingdom was full of such. They will advance the unity of the kingdom which relies on the good will of all. How can the king watch every conversation of every person that takes place in his territory? Therefore he rejoices to find loyal subjects. Though he has force at his disposal, he would much rather have a people who willingly submit to his rule, a happy people, a united people.This must be seen as a picture of the kingdom of heaven. Christ’s kingdom is the perfect kingdom. It is to be admired for the degree of unity within it. In heaven, it will have reached perfection and every soul will align their will perfectly and entirely with the King of kings, so that all will be of the character that the king loves to have in his kingdom and will speak right things. But the church in this world is the visible manifestation of the kingdom of heaven on earth. The church should strive to be on earth what it will be in heaven and therefore each one of us should sanctify ourselves and love our heavenly King, and speak good of his cause, encouraging one another in our most holy faith.If this is how we live and what is in our hearts, then we can be sure that our King will be pleased with us and will guide us through life on a path that brings the most glory to his name and the highest reward in heaven.
