Coming in a block with the theme of false friendships, it is not hard to interpret. Even the blood brothers of a poor man who ought to be expected to have a natural bond with him; even they find it hard to like him.
As those who have been called by Christ we accept his choice and we understand our duty to love one another even though we would not have chosen such friends for ourselves before conversion. We do not ignore or ostracise our brother or sister because there is some perceived lack or weakness, for we know that Christ’s transforming work in that person is not yet complete, just as it is not complete in us. We therefore love one another because of Christ’s work in our hearts and labour to make up any deficiency in each other until we all come ‘to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ’ (Ephesians 4:13).
