The word translated ‘wisdom’ is not the usual word, but is the Hebrew for ‘heart’. It refers here to a heart that is equipped with understanding and wisdom, all that the heart has stored up which enables it to assess the changing scenes of life and to navigate life’s difficulties and perplexities.
He therefore that gets wisdom to form deep friendships in this life indeed loves his own soul because he obtains what cannot be obtained from any other source. Man wishes to explore the universe, but God has already given us on earth what is more precious than anything we will find by crossing the vast distances that separate us from the stars. Without other human beings we are truly alone, and those thoughts which are made to be shared with others, and that instinct we have to get close to another soul can never be fulfilled. Our thoughts remain private and cannot undergo the amplification that comes from exchanging them with another human heart. How much greater is that fellowship when it is between two believers, each one having eternal life within them and able to speak to each other of the highest things of all as known realities in their lives.
