Proverbs 2:2

The word ‘incline’ presents a picture of respect. A dog pricks up its ears. A human turns their head. This word can be missed easily. It is about attention being drawn to something. God’s message is spoken amidst the clamour of this world. You must shut out all the rest so that you can focus on this without being distracted, for certainly Satan is intent on drawing your attention to things that cannot help you spiritually and will make you forget your eternal concerns. You will never find the Lord, if you listen only on the Lord’s day and forget about him the rest of the week. ‘I have so many interests’, you say. No, you have to say, ‘This is everything, I will listen only to this voice.’ Solomon teaches us how to shape our listening.‘Apply thine heart’ - as though the mind, and the feelings are very stubborn, very slow to understand and realise the importance of what we hear. True, I have a stubborn mind, preoccupied with my opinion about God. We don’t have to say all my views are wrong, but we have to bend, to stretch the heart so that we come ready to learn what we have never understood before.
