Most of the older writers think the mine illustration is still here; it may well be so. God has a great store of understanding for his people.
The light and understanding begins with conversion. There is a great mass of it there waiting for us. We have the great blessing of knowing his plans and his purposes in this world. There are many things still hidden from us, but Christ calls his disciple his friends and defines friends as those with whom intimacies are shared (John 15:15). These treasures of sound wisdom are particularly stored up for God’s children, ‘for the righteous’. Our God has determined a lifetime of discovery, and has prepared all manner of experiences for us.
We see there is a condition of blessing – that we are striving to walk in godliness. I may be saved, but there can no blessing for me if I am not living righteously. You can’t be a student of the word if there is no sanctification.
There are those who think that happiness is the great objective of the Christian life, or to have fun, enjoyment in worship. No, righteousness is the great goal. And I pleasing him? Advancing? This is the great end.
