The treasure that exists in the dwelling of the wise is something which he has obtained by honest means, by diligent work, and is the Lord’s reward given him to enjoy. It is the fruit of his labour.
We could think of the case of the unconverted child of Christian parents. He has been given so much. He has had clear boundaries set in his life, warning him against the danger of sin, and telling him not to go that way, but he chooses to ignore them all. He has been given an example of how to live in the context of a warm and loving family in which his parents consistently worshipped God, witnessed to their faith, tried to live by God’s word, and repented of their sins when they failed. How has the son squandered his inheritance and wasted the rare treasure that was given to him? By not valuing his parents’ standards, by not seeing that self-control, kindness, honesty, and faith in God are treasures to be guarded and preserved at all costs.
