Proverbs 21:24 Commentary and Bible Study

This seems to be just a statement and this is about fleeing superiority. The great enemy of everyone, every Christian, every man, woman, boy, girl who loves Christ and follows him, one of the greatest dangers is any sense of superiority or pride. Flee it. ‘Proud and haughty scorner is his name.’ It gets hold of you and it becomes your most dominant feature if you let it. We are all in the same position. It becomes your outstanding characteristic. So like your name, it becomes almost your identify. What is his name? ‘Proud and haughty scorner.’ It is what everyone sees you to be.‘Who dealeth.’ How perfect the translation is! This is stock in trade for him; it has become a persistent habit, because he did not control it. ‘Who dealeth in proud wrath.’ Very interesting. There are two Hebrew words that are very similar, whose construction is very alike, and they both come from the root which means to seize. So strictly you could translate this – who dealeth in seizing. This depicts somebody who is persistently critical, superior, judgemental, hasty to pronounce, and does so with strong feeling. The word is virtually repeated to give it emphasis, it is the way of doing it.
