Another vital factor in sanctification is that we must be correctable, be open to correction. The wicked man does not want to feel any guilt or any shame. Suppose he has been corrected; he is being accused of something. He will tough it out, brazen it through. He is implacable, he is unmoved.Like we were when we were boys. Long ago, if you misbehaved you got caned. There was a lot of caning of boys in schools, and boys were invariably caned before the whole class. In some schools you were always caned before the whole school. After the evening prep, homework hour, the entire school would be assembled and all the miscreants of the day, maybe up to twenty of them, were caned before the whole school, just hoping it was not the rugby coach who was on duty that night. What a boy had to do was to look unmoved. He hardened his face. It does not hurt. I am not going to let on that it hurt. He would win if that happened. Many boys resolved to look resentful so that their face would convey that they did not agree with the judgement at all.
Application
That is what you have here. The Hebrew says, ‘stand’, ‘establishes’ maybe. He establishes his way, but ‘directeth his way’ is good. He is correctable, he listens. Even if someone is being hostile and speaking out of turn and says to you, the trouble with you is X, Y, Z, it is worth listening. They may just be right, or at least partially right. We are always ready to learn, always correctable.
