By all means take this proverb out of its context; use it as a stand-alone principle. It holds good.
Even if we are thinking of an adult early in the Christian life the proverb still applies: ‘Train up a child in the way he should go.’ The Hebrew says, ‘his way’. The proverb really says this – learn these things and they will hold you. You will have integrity if you learn the commandments and what they mean, their implications, and they are so important to you, they will hold you and they will not let you go.
