Proverbs 23:15 Commentary and Bible Study

Here is the parents’ treasure, the creation of something far more precious than gold, far rarer than precious stones, something which the world is incapable of producing. Wisdom in the heart of the child may even appear at a very young age, at a time when others of the same age are exploring the world and turning their thoughts to their successful education and career. The wise child is mature for his or her age beyond their years. They have found the secret of life through the source of all wisdom in the person of Jesus Christ, for this is the only wisdom that the Scripture credits with the term. Wisdom has become the peculiar possession of the individual. The father and mother delight to see the love of wisdom and the love of God and his righteous standards in the heart, knowing how few attain this, and knowing how impossible it is to build this by any mere course of instruction. The existence of wisdom in the heart is evidence that God has been at work, taking the lessons of godly parents and applying them to the child’s heart to produce a living faith. The evidence of wisdom in the heart is found on the lips of the child. It is so easy to speak foolishness and it takes no instruction to speak it because it comes from the natural fallen nature with which we enter the world. But if there is wisdom, appreciation of God’s righteousness, insight into the gospel, determination to live to please the Lord, discernment to avoid evil, then there is evidence of a heart instructed by God. This makes the parent’s heart rejoice. Something has been gained by a little investment. The parents know that their instruction has been used by God, but used in a way that makes it far more effective than it deserves.
