The cunning of Satan is such that sin presents itself in most reasonable and desirable form – it is the Garden of Eden and the forbidden fruit all over again. That is always the beginning of sin – ‘Let not thine heart envy sinners.
It seems that nearly every young couple that gets married today has a gift list which is equal in quality and number of items desired, which rivals what their parents had at the latter end of their life? We train the young today to feel a right to everything right from the very beginning. Look at the list; it is amazing. They want everything from the word go. Why not? Why should there be any restriction, any self-denial? And spiritual up-building and services and Sunday school teaching and visiting the community and all the other things we may engage in, well these are tiresome and irksome. Many churches go along with this now, and they shamelessly just cater for your desires, and they do not reprove anything, and they say you can enjoy anything you like that is in the world.
Some young people are carried away by travel. Every holiday, every opportunity, every university vacation, they are on the other side of the world or somewhere nice and exotic and pleasant. Why can we not indulge ourselves and our desires and so on? Other Christians do. Why are we so fussy and restrictive in our church? Is not fair, it is unreasonable. That is how it all starts. ‘Let not thine heart envy sinners.’ Do not capitulate to the worldly lifestyle. We are first and foremost for the Lord.
Reflect on him. We need to do more reflecting, more contemplating, more mediating. Think of his holiness, think of his love, think of God’s acts towards us, what Christ has done for us. Think of his provision, and there are so many in terms of husbands, wives, family, friends, appointment, whatever your state or you lot. Constantly the Lord blesses and helps us. Think of the answers to your prayers. Think of his promises. Think of his power whenever you need him. Think of his people that he has given you to be with and to relate to. Look forward to him. Think of his heaven. Mediation, there are so many things to reflect on and to give thought to.
