Proverbs 24:6

‘In the multitude of counsellors there is safety.’ What does that mean? Well it is the war context actually when you look at it. ‘The multitude of counsellors’ is something like this – in war you get all the intelligence you can. In WW2, there were some terrible loses in battles because some item of intelligence was neglected, taken no notice of, not taken into consideration. Men were dropped, hundreds of them, by parachute onto tanks, because the intelligence which showed the picture of those tanks was not taken account of somehow when the battle was planned. In ancient times as today, when people went to war they needed to ask, ‘Who knows about the battlefield? Who knows the terrain here? How can we get information about what is ahead, what is here, what is there? The strength of the enemy. Whether they are trained or not?’ All the information needs to be got together. It is in that context that you need the multitude of counsellors.
Application
In other words, this is not some sort of sanction for having big committees. This is simple advice in the Christian life that everything you do you, needs to be done thoughtfully and carefully, taking account of all the facts. If you are job hunting, home hunting, wife seeking, or husband seeking, you are careful. You do not just act on impulse or do it intuitively. Wisdom thinks, ‘in the multitude of counsellors,’ looking at all the factors at your disposal. To make a wise decision prayerfully before the Lord you take account of everything and you neglect nothing.
