Here Solomon tells us what is inappropriate by encouraging its opposite. It is inappropriate to try to use force to resolve every dispute, and think that strong words are more likely to prevail than quiet gentle words; he shows us a better way.
Within the church of God we may show the same demeanour when we speak peaceably to one another even though we have been provoked. Instead of seeking revenge from those who have harmed us, we should calmly state the grounds of our offence and win them over to the extent that they confess their faults and ask for our forgiveness, and in this way the matter is solved without war.
How do we prevail with the Lord? Not by making demands on him as if we could argue that he owed us anything. No, we come like Abraham pleading for Lot. He did not at first dare to bring to God the full extent of his petition in case he asked too much, but instead he lowered himself and spoke of himself as dust and ashes. He did not have any right to even approach the Lord except that God had given him encouragement to do so. Anyone who prays to God in a haughty spirit can be sure that they will receive nothing of the Lord.
