Two different translations of the verb in this verse produce opposite meanings. It is either rendered ‘brings forth’ or by the KJV ‘driveth away’.
When someone comes to us with an evil report which is not justified, our love for the truth should make us indignant that such lies are being told and that we are expected to believe them uncritically. What the gossip deserves is to be rebuked with a force that matches his or her evil intention. The gossip comes cunningly, stealthily, and the blow he secretly strikes against his enemy is disguised. To strip off the disguise with violence is shocking to him, but it is no more than he deserves.
