Every Christian must give attention to the maintenance of the walls of his soul, for they are the first defence against the enemy of souls. A wall is a structure which makes it hard for an enemy to enter, and the walls that the Christian must keep in place need constant repair. One part of that wall between us and our enemies is the attitude that counts us as dead to sin so that we can no longer live in it. That death which occurred at conversion armed us with a new principle of operation which is presented to every temptation as a great discouragement to enter our hearts, our city, Mansoul. To get inside sin must persuade us to abandon this principle at least for a time. Other elements of the wall are the promise of the Lord to keep us, our love for the Lord and the expression of that love through obedience, the breastplate of righteousness, and the encouragement of past victories. If sin makes some incursion into us and we are foolish enough to give way in some respect then the wall suffers damage; we must spend time repairing it by repenting and reaffirming that principle of death to sin before the Lord. We must commit ourselves to him again and ask for help to repair the wall before a small amount of damage becomes a gaping hole.
