This proverb captures the slothful man’s skill at inventing excuses. The excuse is very convincing; indeed if it were true it would be a good reason for not going outside at all.
We must pray for an appreciation of our real needs. We must not lose ourselves in the laziness of sin, for sin settles on us as the sleep of death and turns away from the labour of seeking the Lord. In one way it is much easier to let the soul remain in its state of death, than to stir up concern for our eternal good. The change involved in conversion is so disturbing because conversion is the most radical change that can take place in a life. Every value is questioned and overturned; every allegiance is broken. Wonderful new loyalties are formed in us, but not without the old being set aside. The prize is immeasurably great, but the soul must exert all the strength God gives it in order to take hold of Christ.
