This proverb has been seen before in chapter 19:24. It presents us with a deliberately absurd picture to illustrate the foolishness of laziness.
The proverb puts this failure down to slothfulness, spiritual slothfulness. It is the equivalent of slothfulness in the physical realm. The one who would find Christ must indeed stir himself. He must allow anxiety over the state of his soul to rouse him to action. God has done everything for us. He is like a cook who has prepared a wonderful, nutritious meal, who has served it in front of us so that there is no reason why we should not consume it. Yet we sit there and do not eat it. Instead we allow it to go cold and even try to pretend that it is not there. This is the absurdity of the soul.
