The spiritual sluggard, one who does not sufficiently exert himself in seeking, knocking and asking for the living God, is often characterised by a completely inappropriate level of self-confidence. It seems that in his case the rule is, the less you have, the more you think you have.
Let foolish men and women start to think soberly about themselves, and face the fact that, when it comes to true knowledge, they know less that a one day old child who has found peace in Christ through simple faith. Let them throw away all that they have falsely gathered to themselves and place themselves at the lowest seat of the table and wage war on their own conceit. Let them plead with God to show mercy to them and no offer any reason why he should do so other than that they are sinners who appeal for pardon.
