The love of strife often puts us in an intractable position, one which we cannot control and from which we cannot easily extract ourselves. The illustration is ingenious and wonderfully graphic.
The same love of strife is seen in those who will not listen to the gospel but only want to argue against it. Let us suppress any tendency we have to reject God’s authority over us and recognise that he rightly rebukes and corrects us; it is his perfect right to command us to repent, and our response ought to be amazement that he does not judge us and immediate compliance with is will instead of generating endless arguments against his truth. Those who do battle with God will find that they are taken on an opponent who they can never defeat.
