Although the overall theme of this group of verses seems to be the causing of strife, Solomon now puts together a number of verses on the subject of gossip as a sub-group within this theme. Speech plays a great part in the stirring up of strife, for the gossip speaks with the intention of turning one person against another.
The removal of a gossip from a group is an essential pre-requisite if there is to be peace. Let each member of Christ’s church be diligent to put to death within themselves every inclination to speak evil of others. If there is a serious problem among God’s people, the way to deal with it is not to slyly speak about it within a circle of friends, but to report it to some responsible officer in the church for it to be dealt with in a fair and even handed way according to justice.
