The justice of God chooses the punishment which the offender most dreads. That punishment demonstrates that sin is never profitable, so that what sin gains is seen to be far less than it loses.
Let us fear greatly all the working of malice within us and oppose them with all our might. Christ commands his people to love one another and nothing short of this is safe for us. If there is wickedness in another, we must not try to assist providence in bringing it to light. Christ knew from the beginning that Judas was false and would betray him, but he gave him no valid reason for his betrayal. Instead he loved even him and called him his familiar friend, and even the sign that identified his betrayer was an act of kindness, which was rewarded so cruelly.
