We cannot find contentment in life unless we know what things steal it from us, and therefore Solomon shows us major causes of disquiet and sorrow so that we can avoid them. A similar thought is found in Proverbs 19:13.
When a man seeks a wife, the Puritans used to say he should do so with the ear not the eye. What she says is a much clearer indication of her character than what she looks like, for her words come straight from her heart. Let him listen carefully to her speech, because he should set a higher value on her character than her looks. Outward beauty fades, but the inward beauty of the heart increases more and more in the child of God.
