The mind of another person who has fresh and distinct thoughts of his or her own is of huge advantage to us, and the effect we have on one another is one of God’s ways of sanctifying and improving us. It is easier to sharpen a knife with a grindstone because the stone has the ability to remove metal from the knife to produce a sharp edge, but an alternative is to use a steel, made essentially of the same material as the knife.
Let God’s people often speak together about the things that are most important to them. Let them spend time sharing their experience of what the Lord has done for them. Let them deliberately discuss Scriptural doctrines and try to learn from each other, as independent minds are able to contribute distinct insights as the Lord has taught them. Between close friends, these discussions will become times of great joy and discovery which they look forward to. They will advance beyond others in their appreciation of the truth because they refine each other’s understanding.
