The comparison is simple, but to reflect on it does us much good. A man would expend considerable effort in nurturing a fig tree, for in time past it would often have been his prize tree given pride of place and growing beside his house.
The relationship that the Christian has with the Lord is often pictured as one of service. Christ’s parables illustrate the period between his departure from this world and his coming again at the last day as a period of service. We are his servants given responsibility for parts of his estate and given the privilege of trading with his goods. He will look for a return in proportion to the trust he has invested in us. Will we be faithful to him in his absence, and work for the advance of his kingdom, remain true to his holy standards, not make peace with his enemies, and long for his return and subjugation of all his enemies? Will we consider his tastes in how we live, publish his message to a lost world, and protect his church on earth from all the attacks launched by the gates of Hades? If so, then we will know eat the fruit of our service to the Lord and enjoy his very great reward.
