The comparison seems unequal for Solomon sets two inanimate forces against the desire of a living being. Is there nothing else he could have chosen? All the emphasis falls on the second part of the verse – the eyes of man – which we might have thought were the smaller of the two insatiabilities, but which he wants to draw our attention to.
Jesus Christ came into the world to give us life and life in abundance. God has not created man’s vast appetite in order to torment him with unfulfilled longing forever, but he has created man to need his God and to be driven to seek after the only one who can fulfil his need. Let us not resist God’s gracious drawing, but humble ourselves and yield to the only one who can ever satisfy us.
