In another picture of dissatisfaction, Solomon describes the restlessness that it creates. Here is a bird that has spent considerable time and effort constructing a nest.
Paul says, ‘Let every man abide in the same calling wherein he was called. Art thou called being a servant? care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather’ (1 Corinthians 7:20-21). Many would view servitude as a serious disadvantage and one which makes happiness impossible, but this is not how the apostle teaches us to think. Yes, we may legitimately improve our condition if the opportunity arises, but this should not be our constant preoccupation. There is a vanity in believing that we have the power to improve our lives whether or not the Lord is working with us, for ‘except the Lord build the house, They labor in vain that build it’ (Psalm 127:1). Contentment is a difficult lesson to learn, but we need only one thing and that is to have the blessing of God and to know that the Lord is with us (Exodus 33:15).
