Here is a factor which is often left out of the reckoning. If we were to ask most people what gives boldness and courage, they would probably say that it comes from strong passion, from single-mindedness, from a readiness to face hardship and danger because the cause is worth more than any loss they may suffer.
Let no one listen to the voice that says, ‘Indulge yourself; take a break from your strict righteousness and give yourself a moral rest. You will be all the stronger for it.’ Or another voice that whispers, ‘This is only a small departure from the right way. It will do no harm.’ Conscience cannot easily be silenced, and the attempt to do so causes great damage to our hearts. In order to preach the gospel to others a man must speak out of a heart that has no secret corners of shame but can declare the word of God openly and courageously.
Of course we know there is a Day of Judgment; it is so obvious that we know it. Why else do we feel bad about things we did long ago? Why is conscience not just a voice that speaks to our present actions and forgets about the past? It is because we know that there is yet a debt to pay for past wrongs. We know that we have not yet settled our accounts with God, that he will still require a payment from us for past deeds.
