Happy is the man who fears! This is not something that we would expect to say. It sounds contradictory, and of course, in this is found the surprise factor.
The believer thanks God for his conscience. He prays to God for a sensitive conscience. He is quick to respond to the promptings of conscience, and is afraid to push it away when it speaks to him. He continually studies the word of God to further instruct conscience. He obeys God, not because others are looking on, but because God sees him, and an enlightened conscience looks towards the Lord and longs to please him. It is less about shame before men and more about shame before God, indeed it can bear shame from men if only it has God’s approval. Conscience not only condemns us, but a good conscience is a source of great joy and peace.
