As always we must note the points of comparison and the points of similarity. Both halves of the proverb are about the principles which govern an individual life and strongly influence the conduct of that life.
At every point where we are tempted to trust ourselves, solve our own problems, or choose our own way we ask for the Lord’s help in prayer. And we never stop doing this. We do not say, ‘I can be independent now; I have my own reserves of wisdom and can venture forward on my own.’ Have we now got skill to match the devil on our own? Have we got insight into the ways of God so that we can choose our own way? Our wisdom is to bury our pride and to take refuge in humility.
