Two things are connected in this proverb which an unbelieving world is reluctant to put together. ‘What does discernment, the ability to make wise judgment, have to do with conduct, with the direction of a man’s life?’ the evil man asks.
God’s children will judge the world (1 Corinthians 6:2). They will weigh the words, actions, and even the secret motives of the wicked when they are called to participate in the final judgment. If so, then as Paul argues, they must be able to judge things pertaining to this life. Anyone in church leadership is almost certain to have to deal with cases of church discipline. When they come, they must be approached with great care: with much prayer, and with humility, with concern for the honour of God, and the protection of the church. The discernment needed to do this difficult task comes from a life of seeking the Lord and of diligence in keeping a conscience void of offence towards God and man.
