A similar proverb is found in chapter 19:1 and, though translated differently, the Hebrew is identical in the first half of the verse. But while the thought there is about integrity as a factor in friendship, here it is about how people are prepared to cut corners in order to get an advantage in this world.
Let the Christian be content with what he has in this life whether it is little or much. Let us not hurt anyone in order to enrich ourselves. Let us be scrupulously honest in all our dealings with men and women and owe no debt to anyone. Let us pay the wages we have promised to pay and let our word be reliable. What comes into our hands let us use to help those that we can who are in greater need than us.
