The bringing up of a child is a project, a long term enterprise which calls for much wisdom. No one should attempt a task of such great magnitude and having such great consequences, unless they have some understanding of the difficulties they will face.
Each generation knows it is here only for a time and that it must hand over power to the next generation. The owner of the smallholding in ancient times knew that the day would come when he would no longer be able to work as before and his son must take responsibility. There were therefore few projects as important as the preparation of the child for that day, and for the Christian this training has eternal consequences.
