The character of a ruler has an enormous influence on the land over which he presides. It is about the nature of kings and the corresponding nature of their kingdoms.
Wisdom knows that a kingdom cannot operate on any other basis than truth. Satan’s kingdom is ultimately self-destructive, and part of the plan of God is to demonstrate this and show the vast superiority of truth and trust and honesty. This world fallen and kings and their subjects are for the most part given over to the values of the kingdom of darkness. Only rarely does a king come to power who is determined to put into practice God’s standards: this is the record even of Judah’s kings. Consequently the kingdoms of this world resemble the kingdom of darkness far more than the kingdom of light. But the day is coming when Christ’s perfect reign will begin, and that is where the hope of all God’s people lies.
