As Matthew Henry pointed out so long ago, it does not say, so shall thy bags be filled with plenty and thy wardrobes burst out. Many people seem to think that is what it says. They say, ‘If I steward everything to the Lord, then I will be blessed,’ as though you are going to get money for money, substance for substance. Oh no, says the word of God, ‘Steward your tithes and your money and what you will get back will not be bags and wardrobes; what you will get back will be barns and presses.’ Now maybe that is not what you want back. Maybe that is not the kind of return you are seeking. As Matthew Henry says, ‘Steward to the Lord all your substance. You will not get finery and money but you will get usefulness and useful things. The great steward will be rewarded by great usefulness, things which can be turned to account, things which have a practical value and realisation and usefulness.’
