Here is the parable of the rebellious son. My son – Solomon as ever is characteristically concerned for all of us but concerned chiefly for the young with this tender form of expression.
For the believer there is nothing more dangerous than insensibility to the reproofs of God. Most of the time they are so patient and so gentle and that is what this verse means. My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord. This is a strong word. The Hebrew indicates, do not spurn or disdain or throw off or treat with contempt the chastening of the Lord and that chastening is coming constantly to us. From the word of God we are often chastened, that is to say, we are reproved or corrected and we can see that we need to focus on something and do much better. Do we spurn that, disdain that?
Sometimes our consciences trouble us, sometimes the clouds roll across the heavens and we realise that the smile of God is shut off from us, there are things we need to attend to and we know it and we ignore them. These things are in various areas of the Christian life. Sometimes it is in relationships. It is common that good, wholesome, Christian people can have a relationship difficulty, something they have not patched up, not put right, some feud, some dislike of somebody else, some over-critical spirit towards somebody. They don't correct it and say, well, this is something I am not going to give any attention to, I am just going to be like this. And God may be very firm with them and may even take blessings away and may move in their consciences and may even take away their peace but they are not going to put this thing right.
