Now you have a picture here of construction and operation, an illustration, a parable, a simile for conversion, and for the blessing of God. Solomon does this.
All these pictures portray life and conversion. God alone is the perfect designer and builder, and without this wisdom, things would not work. The application is obvious in this great evangelistic appeal of this chapter. Your life needs to be designed and built by the same perfect wisdom. The message of salvation, which saves you, is the same source of wisdom and knowledge, which has constructed the universe, and which keeps all its systems going. If you proceed through life with no God, no designer for your life, there would be chaos, and you see it in life. You see a person who has great learning, but there is no spiritual life in that person, there is no knowledge of God, there is no blessing and help and power of God. So you will often see a person with great learning and no morals. The person is a moral disaster. The character is weak, unsightly, and ugly. What a distorted being. It requires the message of the gospel to be in place for the structure to be perfect, and to work properly. Or you will see a person who has great wealth and no happiness, the design is incomplete. That person needs the same wisdom, the same God that has made a perfect universe with all its cycles; that is the reasoning here. You see a person who indulges in pleasure, entertainments and recreations, and yet you might find that same person is desperately unsuccessful in relationships. But because that person has not had the blessing of God and a changed heart and life, it has not been a perfect structure, it has been out of balance.
‘By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.’ This is a very beautiful verse. Why the power and the knowledge and the wisdom of God can do things that require great power, disturbing the very oceans, and can do things that are so gentle at the same time, the refreshing moisture of the dew, and can transform the one into the other. The heavy damaging, potentially harmful weight of water, which we may fear, the depths, and yet God can turn them into refreshing showers, into dew droplets. And why with the wisdom of God in us, with the salvation of God, the sinful things, the uncomely things, the selfish aspects, the destructive aspects of human nature can be transformed into gentleness and blessing and sensitivity and thoughtfulness. All these things are implicit in these beautiful pictures. How we need the salvation of God, and the blessing of God, to transform us and to change us.
