Proverbs 3:24

We are still on this journey in this verse. To sleep on a journey could he hazardous. After all there were wild animals. When your party went to sleep, you had to set a watch. Maybe there were not enough of you to sustain a night long watch, but here is the wonderful promise in this illustration. ‘When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid’, because there will be protection. You can imagine, the whole family has left the tents or the flat-roofed houses of the village and is now on this long journey and it is the first night and everybody is terrified. Oh the things that can happen to us at night! The family is so terrified that they are getting things rather out of perspective. We do not have to do that when we have found the Lord, because he is with us no matter what happens. This is an illustration in life of peace and security. With the Lord you will have peace. Nothing can finally disturb you or harm you.

Application

If we get very sick, we may be sad and anxious about what will become of our family. There are legitimate sources of anxiety. But we do not have to be terrified out of our wits. Because if we know the Lord, and have found him, and walk with him, we know that we are in his hands, we cannot leave this life, before the moment that he has determined, and then we go to the greatest adventure possible for any human being, from time into eternity. We go into the presence of Almighty God, and the wonders of eternity. The Lord is with us, we do not have to be terrified – what shall I do, whatever will become of me, what will happen to me next? We do not have to go through life shaking like leaves because we have the Lord and we seek his blessing, and we commit all things to him.
