Proverbs 3:34
Comments
The scorner is cruel with his tongue. The scornful are proud. ‘They treat with scoffing disregard the truths and precepts of God.’ They make God their enemy by insulting him, as if they were a match for battle with him. This madness is egged on by the devil who does not care that they throw themselves into a fight which will destroy them in a moment. But is our scorn for God a match for his scorn for us? When his patience comes to an end and he determines that our opportunity for salvation is ended and we have only hardened our hearts against him, then he will arise, and he will scorn the scornful. He will say to them that their lives of disobedience were shameful, that their attempts to subvert his purposes were powerless and pitiful. They lifted themselves up against the Lord and thought so highly of themselves that they believed they were a match for him. How grossly they have miscalculated. But the lowly knew themselves to be nothing and came to God for mercy. They knew their greatest need was for pardon and new life, and they did not pretend to be good enough for him but appealed to his grace and they received it. These will be lifted up forever, but the scornful will be put down and not rise again.
