How skilfully and with how few words Solomon depicts the proud and haughty. This is the direction of travel of all men and women, for sin causes all to promote self beyond what is sober.
How much better to humble ourselves beneath the might hand of God. It is our relation to him that matters, and it is by measuring ourselves against him, not against each other, that we learn the truth about ourselves. The repentant sinner approaches God with downcast eyes, beating his breast, and saying with David, ‘I am not able to look up’ (Psalm 40:12). The Christian sees the haughtiness of the wicked and acts like Moses in falling to the ground, lest he seem to behave like them before the Lord and share in their imminent destruction (Numbers 16:4).
